Are TUMS Keto Friendly? Carbs In TUMS Antacids

While most people who start a keto diet find that their indigestion and heartburn dramatically ease, many keto beginners struggle for the first few weeks as their body gets into ketosis.

But if you have heartburn, what you want to know right now is if TUMS and other antacids are allowed on a keto diet?

Do TUMS Have Carbs?

Yes, all TUMS have at least some carbohydrates, though the amount depends on which type you’re taking.

TUMS contain between 0.5 and 1.45 grams of carbs per tablet. The sugar-free variety has the fewest carbs at just 0.5 grams, while TUMS Ultra Strength and TUMS Smoothies have the most at 1.45 grams per tablet.

To put that in perspective, a single regular strength TUMS has about the same carbs as one bite of a strawberry. It’s not nothing, but it’s not going to wreck your macros either.

The carbs in TUMS come mostly from the sugars and inactive ingredients used to make them taste decent. That’s why the sugar-free version has fewer total carbs — they’ve swapped out the sugar but there are still a small number of carbohydrates from the other ingredients.

One thing to keep in mind is that TUMS labels don’t always make the carb content obvious. The packaging focuses on the active ingredient, calcium carbonate, and you sometimes have to dig into the full nutrition details on the TUMS website to find the carb counts. That’s why I put together the comparison table above so you can see them all in one place.

How Many Carbs Are In TUMS?

Well, the good news is that there are not many carbs in TUMS.

TUMS have between 0.5 and 1.45 grams of carbs in a single tablet. The lowest carb TUMS is the sugar-free type, and the highest carb TUMS is the larger ultra strength variety.

I created a table of the various types of TUMS below with their corresponding carbs per tablet.

TUMS TypeCarbs/Tablet
TUMS Regular Strength 5000.75 grams
TUMS Extra Strength 7501.1 grams
TUMS Extra Strength Sugar-Free0.5 grams
TUMS Smoothies Extra Strength1.45 grams
TUMS Ultra Strength 10001.45 grams

Is There Sugar In TUMS?

Some people find that even small amounts of sugar can trigger sweet cravings when they are starting a keto diet.

For this reason, I recommend that you completely avoid sugar for the first three weeks of keto.

Most varieties of TUMS have one or more types of sugar, except for the TUMS Extra Strength Sugar-Free variety, which has no sugar, though it still has 0.5 grams of carbohydrates.

Will TUMS Break Ketosis?

This is one of the most common concerns I hear from people just starting keto, and I get it. When you’ve worked hard to get into ketosis, the last thing you want is to get knocked out by a heartburn tablet.

TUMS will not break ketosis for most people. Even the highest carb variety (TUMS Ultra Strength) only has 1.45 grams of carbs per tablet. Taking two tablets would only add about 3 grams to your daily carb count, which is a small fraction of the typical 20-gram keto limit.

Where people get tripped up is taking TUMS multiple times throughout the day. If you’re popping 8 to 10 tablets daily, those carbs start to add up and you’re also consuming sugar with every dose, which can trigger cravings that lead to bigger problems than the carbs themselves.

My advice? If you need TUMS occasionally, take them and don’t stress about it. But if you’re reaching for them every day, that’s a sign you should look at what’s causing the heartburn in the first place. When I was starting keto, I found that cutting out dairy and eating slower made a huge difference. And when heartburn does hit, I reach for apple cider vinegar before I reach for the TUMS bottle.

Are TUMS gluten-free?

Gluten is another ingredient that can trigger cravings in some keto beginners. However, I have good news regarding TUMS.

All varieties of TUMS are gluten-free.

Are TUMS Keto Friendly?

When we consider all of the facts about TUMS that we just learned, we can come to a final decision about the product.

TUMS are keto-friendly because they are very low-carb. However, most varieties do contain small quantities of sugar, which you may want to avoid when starting a keto diet. TUMS Sugar-Free is your best choice when on a keto diet.

Alternatives To TUMS And Other Antacids?

In our house, we do keep TUMS around, but they are not our go-to solution for heartburn.

Instead, we go a bit more old-school and natural.

Apple Cider Vinegar For Heartburn

I’m not going to sugar coat this…taking a shot of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) hurts. It burns like shooting bad booze.

However, it is the fastest and surest way I’ve found to douse heartburn. Within moments, my pain is gone regardless of what poor eating choices I made.

You have a few options when taking ACV for heartburn.

#1 – Take A Shot Of Apple Cider Vinegar

This is the fastest and hardest method. But It works fast.

#2 – Water Apple Cider Vinegar Down And Shoot It

This makes it easier to get down, because it doesn’t burn as bad. However, it takes at least twice the shots to get a good amount and the relieve comes slower.

#3 – Add Apple Cider Vinegar To Water Or Tea

This is the easiest way and delivers the slowest relief from heartburn.

Or cheat and get ACV Capsoles [ See on Amazon >>> ].

Baking Soda For Heartburn

If you can’t handle the burn of ACV, baking soda is another great zero-carb option that’s probably already sitting in your kitchen.

  • Mix one teaspoon of baking soda into an 8-ounce glass of water and drink it.

It won’t win any taste awards — it’s salty and a little weird — but the sodium bicarbonate neutralizes stomach acid on contact, similar to the calcium carbonate in TUMS but without any carbs or sugar.

The best part for keto? Baking soda has zero carbs, zero sugar, and zero calories. You don’t have to think twice about it affecting your macros.

If you want to avoid the taste, they also make capsules of Baking Soda [ See on Amazon >>> ].

A couple of things to keep in mind with baking soda, though. It’s high in sodium, so don’t overdo it if you’re watching your salt intake. And it’s really meant as an occasional fix, not something you should be using every single day. If you’re dealing with heartburn that often, it’s worth looking at what’s triggering it rather than just treating the symptoms.

Between ACV and baking soda, we almost never need to reach for the TUMS in our house. But it’s nice knowing they’re there as a keto-friendly backup when we need them.
